Physical therapy combines therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular
re-education and modalities to rehabilitate the spine
and other parts of the body. Therapeutic exercise encompasses
pain relief, strength and flexibility training, regaining
movement or range of motion and endurance training. Neuromuscular
re-education consists of proper postural alignment,
balance and coordination training and correction of
body mechanics. Modalities may supplement therapeutic
exercise and neuromuscular re-education. They include
heat/cold therapy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation
and massage/manual therapy. We focus on active treatment
and participation in the healing process.
The purpose of physical therapy is to help you return
to active life as quickly as possible. Therapy strives
to reduce pain, increase flexibility, range of motion,
and function, build strength, and correct posture and
body mechanics to prevent further injuries.
As muscles are stretched and exercised, it is only
natural to experience some soreness. As therapy progresses,
range of motion and strength increases as soreness diminishes. In
general, you’ll feel better following therapy.
Because each person is different, rates of healing
are different. We can usually get an idea of your progression
within two weeks. Even though we are here teaching you
and rehabilitating you, it is your responsibility to
perform your Home Exercise Program. This is a major
factor in how quickly you will recover.
The goals of physical therapy are to restore joint
function and joint mobility, increase muscle strength,
decrease pain and inflammation, improve flexibility,
resume normal activities and return to work/sports as
tolerated. All of these goals can be achieved by working
together as a team to help you recover as quickly as
possible.
