History of Chiropractic
Chiropractic has a rich history. Spinal manipulation,
chiropractic’s primary treatment, is used to promote
the body’s natural healing process. One
of the earliest indications of soft tissue manipulation
is demonstrated by the ancient Chinese Kong Fou Document
written about 2700 B.C., which was brought to the Western
World by missionaries. Chiropractic became more
recognized about 100 years ago when Daniel David Palmer
(D.D. Palmer) gave an “adjustment” to what
was felt to be a misplaced vertebra in the upper spine
of a deaf janitor. The janitor then observed that
his hearing improved.
The word “chiropractic” is derived from
the Greek words “cheir” and “praktkos”
meaning “done by hand”.
Today, chiropractic is the second largest primary health
care provider in the United States based on the number
of providers and public utilization, second to allopathic
(medical). The chiropractic approach to health
is natural, conservative and seeks to restore neuro-musculoskeletal
structural integrity, usually through your spinal structure,
resulting in improvement of your body’s function.
Doctors of Chiropractic do not utilize drugs or perform
surgical procedures, but rather provide a primary treatment
method of specific vertebral manipulations, commonly
called “an adjustment”. An adjustment may
improve the spine’s alignment and range of motion,
and relieve pain and pressure on the vertebral joints
and nerves. Depending on the spinal area to be
adjusted and the level of degeneration, an adjustment
can be performed lying down, sitting or standing.
